sea shells.

she swayed wearily in a sea of longing,

forgetting that she knows how to swim in such deep water.

as the tide ebbed and flowed, ebbed and flowed

she kept her feet pressed

firmly in the rocky sand below.

all she could think about was the little boy

on the boardwalk- “sea shells

get your painted sea shells!”

the waves crashed onto her bare stomach

and splashed a few large drops of salty water

onto her lips.

she squinted her eyes and felt a bead of sweat

trickle down her nose, onto her cheek.

her body felt hot, almost liquid.

she decided–

to dive in.
